Abstract: Based on different theories and techniques for the reduction of stress concentration ? and on the basis of forms of breech ring fillets in general use, over a dozen of fillet forms are proposed. The distribution of stress in the fillet of a breech ring is studied in detail, making use of methods of finite element, boundary element and photoelasticity. It is seen that with the better forms of breech ring fillets a reduction in the maximum tensile stress of about 20 percent is attainable.
