Abstract:

Design considerations, structural details and performance of a 101mm bore single-stage light gas gun are given in this paper, predetermined reproducible velocities can be achieved Within the range of 50m/s and 1450m/s. Either nitrogen or hydrogen up to the pressure of 30 MPa is used as the driving gas. The whole system, including catching and retarding mechanism,is confined and evacuated to the pressure of 1 Pa before impact. The gun is particularly suitable for experiments in research on dynamic properties of materials.
