Cavitation Asymmetry and Tail-Slap Characteristics of a Finned Supercavitating Projectile during Oblique Water Entry under the Combined Effect of Angle of Attack and Crossflow
The cavitation evolution and dynamic response mechanisms of a finned supercavitating projectile during oblique water entry under the combined effects of angle of attack and crossflow are investigated. This paper establishes a multiphase numerical model based on the RANS equations, SST
k-ω
turbulence model, Schnerr-Sauer cavitation mo
del, and VOF multiphase model. The cavitation characteristics and dynamic response of the projectile entering water at a velocity of 100 m/s and an angle of 45° are systematically investigated. The results indicate that the crossflow has a significant influence on the cavitation morphology of the projectile during oblique water entry: the positive crossflow exacerbates the cavitation asymmetry and tail-slap instability, while a specific negative crossflow (-2 m/s) mitigates the asymmetry of cavitation induced by oblique water entry, thereby enhancing the stability of the projectile. The positive and negative angles of attack also affect the orientation of cavity asymmetry, and the larger the absolute value of the angle of attack, the greater the degree of asymmetry is, and the higher the tail-slap intensity is. The superposition or cancellation effects of pitching moment occurs when both the angle of attack and crossflow are present. Coupling in the same direction amplifies the asymmetry of cavitation and instability, whereas coupling in the opposite directions alleviates the asymmetry of cavitation and enhances the stability of the projectile during water entry.
