Abstract:

Motion detection plays an important role in visual systems, On the basis of Reichardt’s model of motion detection for insects an engineering model of motion detectors with multiple-channels has been proposed in this article. This model is capable of detecting direction and transverse angular velocity in a wide available range in real time. Not only can it detect the motion of a pattern with a discriminatable outline and edge, but also detect the motion of a texture pattern without a discriminatable outline and edge.
The parameters of the model are suggested as follows:
1. The time constant τL of low-pass filter of the first order influences the available range of velocity detection. It depends on the space d between two recievers of the motion detector, delay time ta corresponding to the superior limit of detectable velocity and delay time tb corresponding to the inferior limit of detectable velocity as well as the degree of precision required in velocity detection.
2. The ratio of time constants high-pass filter τH to loss-pass filter τL also influences the available range of velocity detection. The smaller the tine constant LH is, the greater the superior limit of detectable velocity will be.
3. The intergratation time T of correlator is determined as follows:

4. The available range of velocity detection by motion detectors having multiple-channels consisting of N channels is enlarged to . The space d between two recievers of motion detector in the kth channel can be determind as follows:

k=0, 1, ···, N.
